Fortune Dares Poetry Series: learning to sing

at once I lost myself and saw me go
at twice the else would say they saw me too
at all is nothing more than what is thought –
thought be dead except it’s born of truth
I gave a promise to the dawn of night
I took some breath and beat of heart to live
I glimpsed something I can’t forgive or get
aghast of mind I chose and kept it lit
to gather with it now and then again
to trifle with the glam of what is left
to dreary-laden-heavy with the sent
I know we will and then be left for it
think we won’t and never will we try
thank we can’t and so there too we die –
it’s not so much about the right or wrong
as it is the stuff of pain and joy in song
